Stripe purchases and access

Stripe purchases and access

What each Stripe purchase grants, and how renewals, failed payments, cancellations and refunds change access.

Once Stripe is connected, Voidhash turns each Stripe purchase into access to your connected products. This page lists what a purchase grants and how later Stripe events change it.

What a purchase grants

  • Subscription. Grants one product: its first price that is connected. Other prices on it, such as add-ons, add to its revenue but grant nothing.
  • One-time Checkout Session. Grants every connected product among its line items, each as its own purchase with its line items' cost, including quantity, discounts and tax. Unconnected line items, such as shipping, add to the first connected product's revenue. A session made free by a discount still grants its products.
  • Price change. When a subscription switches to another connected price, the new product is granted when Stripe applies the switch, whether invoiced now or at renewal. A scheduled switch is granted when it takes effect.

How Stripe events change access

Stripe eventEffect on access
A subscription invoice is paidStarts or renews the subscription.
A renewal payment failsAccess stays until Stripe's last retry fails, then ends, whether Stripe cancels the subscription, marks it unpaid or leaves it past due. Paying the invoice later restores it while the subscription is active.
Canceled at period endAuto-renewal turns off; access lasts until the period ends.
Canceled immediatelyAccess ends.
A one-time payment is fully refundedAccess to every product it bought ends.
A subscription payment is refundedThe refund is recorded, but the subscription continues. Cancel it in Stripe to end access.
A partial refund or a lost disputeDeducted from revenue. A partial refund of a multi-product payment is shared in proportion to each product's cost.

See Subscription lifecycle (developer docs) for how these states appear across providers and webhooks.
